Both turn a PDF back into an editable InDesign document. One is professional desktop software you buy for the year; the other is a browser job you pay for once. Which is cheaper depends entirely on how often you do this.
| Sourceback | Markzware PDFMarkz | |
|---|---|---|
| price | $0.50 / page, $1 minimum per file | $259/year subscription, or $429 once for a perpetual licence |
| commitment | None — no account, no card on file | Annual renewal, or a one-off purchase with paid upgrades later |
| where it runs | In the browser, any OS | Desktop app. macOS for PDFMarkz; Windows users need PDFMarkz SE |
| install | Nothing to install | Download and install, per machine |
| try before paying | Free fidelity preview on every file | A free "Freebie" build that previews PDFs but cannot export |
| output | IDML | IDML plus PDF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, TXT, RTF and HTML |
| built for | The occasional lost file | Studios converting files as part of the daily job |
Both produce IDML that opens in InDesign. Fidelity depends far more on how the PDF was made than on which tool opens it — which is why the free preview matters.
Different products. PDFMarkz is licensed professional software with a broad format range; this is a single job run in a browser.
Do the arithmetic on your own volume. At $0.50 a page, the $259 annual licence works out to about 43 pages a month — roughly 500 a year. Below that, per-file pricing costs less; consistently above it, the licence pays for itself.
